MR SMILEY: My Last Pill and Testament
by Howard Marks

The last pill and testament from Britain’s most famous and well-loved drug smuggler, Howard Marks

Published by Macmillan on 24th September 2015, £18.99  •  Hardback  •  9781509809660

Howard Marks is the most famous drug smuggler of his age, and a hero to a generation. On his release from one of America’s toughest prisons, Howard made a promise to himself to go straight. No more drugs, no more smuggling, no more fake passports. He would retire to a quiet life with his family in the Balearic Islands of Spain. It didn’t quite work out that way.

This was the mid-nineties, the height of the ecstasy and clubbing boom, and Ibiza was at the very centre of the vortex for the ‘E generation’. Pills had taken the place of marijuana, Paul Oakenfold had replaced The Rolling Stones as the music of the masses, but some people are just born for life on the other side of the law.

The Commune at Bestival

communeANOTHER NEW ATTRACTION FOR 2105:

THE COMMUNE

A CELEBRATION OF OUR SUMMER OF LOVE

www.Bestival.net / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram / Tumblr

#Bestival15 / #SummerOfLove

Celebrating our Summer of Love in the very finest style we have yet another brand new area, The Commune, coming to Bestival as a very special one-off this year. An ocular spectacular resonating with the spirit of Bestival, The Commune will not only be the bedrock of the soul of our Summer of Love, but will also create a jaw-dropping eyeful visible far and wide across the site, featuring our incredible Flower of Fire, a nine-petalled 15 and half metre pyro-installation radiating peace and love from the centre of the Magic Meadow all weekend long. Entwining brand new ideas with ancient philosophy, The Commune is the essence of our ideals and the hotbed of our Summer of Love, designed by Josie da Bank and programmed by long-time Bestival cohort, Lost & Found’s chief facilitator of the unusual, Bobby Lost.

Commune Programmer Bobby Lost says: “The Commune is a place where you can just be you, whether that’s dancing like no one is watching, hugging, connecting with others and becoming nourished, or sharing deep experiences with strangers, getting assigned missions to spread more love around the festival like to hug 100 strangers, joining a drum circle, or just sitting and being. I’d like the commune to be a home for ‘Hedonism with Heart’, a joyful celebration of life, embodiment and freedom of expression. I wanted to provide a space to come and move outside your comfort zone without getting off your chops”.

She’s the best around with the crazy style and her music makes us lose control, so we’re unutterably excited to announce that the incredible Missy Elliott will be headlining Sunday night at our Summer of Love in a European festival exclusive. One of the greatest artists of all time, and a true musical innovator, we couldn’t be more ecstatic that she’s coming to Robin Hill for her first UK show in nine years, and what is destined to be one of the most epic Bestival finales of all time. Ever.

Commenting on her headline appearance, Missy Elliott said: “I’m very excited to be performing at Bestival this year! I can’t wait to see all my fans I haven’t seen in some time… new ones and my day one fans! We are gonna have a blast together! Bring your dancing outfits and kicks!”

Bestival b-boy Rob da Bank says: “So, putting the final pieces together for the world’s most intricate jigsaw puzzle that is Bestival, I’m mighty proud to announce our Sunday headliner Missy Elliott. The very lifeblood of Bestival is new music. A passion that runs deep within the entire Bestival team, our head honcho Rob da Bank’s knack for spotting the most exciting new bands known to humanity is legendary, and has seen Bestival history littered with debut, or very early, festival appearances by some of what are now the world’s biggest acts. These days cunningly entitled the Invaders of the Future Stage, our new music mecca is where you need to be this September 10-13 at Robin Hill, if you want to see the next big thing before they become stadium-filling mega-stars.

A very modern Rob da Bank says: “OK, so this has to be my favourite stage at Bestival. It’s the beating heart of what Bestival is about – breaking new talent and exposing the undercard. It takes me about six months to book, on and off, wondering who the next wave of breaking bands are going to be, and trying to get the right mix of electronic, folk, soul and indie, dub and grime… and already I can see loads of these acts being on much bigger stages next year. Everyone from Ed Sheeran and Alt-J to Kate Tempest have played early gigs on this stage. So, from the wildly different sounds of Ratboy and Lion Babe, to The Skints, Clarence Clarity and the Island’s very own Plastic Mermaids, I promise you, this is the sound of the future”. Read more

Back by popular demand, we’re delighted to announce the return of Caravanserai to Camp Bestival this year. A ramshackle run of vintage caravans and fair rides, converted by long-term Camp Bestival collaborator Monsieur Bateman into a uniquely enchanting bar and sideshow stage, Caravanserai is filled with exotic gewgaws and intriguing frippery. Encompassing Pig’s Big Ballroom’s usual melange of authentic flappers’ fare and mixing it up with steam-punk-powered, brass-infused electro swing bonhomie, it’s the place to go wild and grab some cocktail treats while you kick back and enjoy the floor-filling gypsy-fuelled vintage beats.

Rob da Bank says: “Caravanserai is incredible. What a concept, and beautifully executed – a ring of madcap caravans sawn, welded and shaped into a lovely homespun venue populated by all our favourite freaks and oddballs, powered by a soundtrack of electro swing, world vibes, folk and sounds from another era. It’s just the place to start your day or finish your night at Camp. See you at the bar”. Read more
