Making Bestival the festival to discover new music is a big part of what keeps us buzzing. Finding an incredible new band that could change your life, or that one amazing unknown track that will blow everyone away is something that our intrepid curator Rob da Bank has made his life’s work. With his monumental musical knowledge helping him to sniff out a cornucopia of mysterious gems, Rob’s track record for discovering the next big thing is unparalleled, and the Invaders of the Future stage is Bestival’s cathedral of cutting edge sounds where you’ll find this year’s selection of bright young things who could just be your new favourite band in The Future.

Rob da Bank says: “Yup, we all love a stonking big headliner at Bestival, and huge DJs and bands that have sold millions of records smashing it on our stages, but mostly where you’ll find me across the weekend at Bestival is in our Invaders stage checking out the new bands. Once more we’ve gone mentally diverse from Radio 1 and SXSW darling’s Danny L Harle, Pup and Sunflower Bean through the amazing Eska and a takeover from the hottest label out there, PC Music, to local island talent Born Ina Barn and Xockha. See you down the front!”

Predicting something very special as we charge inexorably towards The Future, the Bestival crew are set to whet your appetite with a hearty helping of amazing bands and DJs that will be joining The Cure Major Lazer, Diplo, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Bastille, Skepta, Wolf Alice and many more at Robin Hill this coming September.

Rob da Bank says: “I love booking Bestival. It’s proper ‘kid in a sweetshop’ time when I look at all the acts out there and try to curate a line-up that makes sense across many genres… which is how I think Bestivalites like it. It’s not just booked for you, it’s for me too, so I cannot wait for a weekend encompassing Kano, Goldie, Mura Masa, Evian Christ and Reggie and Bollie. If you fancy it too, I’ll see you on the ferry!”

We’ve always been lovers not fighters at Bestival but when it comes to a little bit of wrestling, you know you can count us in. Especially when that most noble of sports is elevated to a visceral psychedelic art form with added sass that’s guaranteed to blow our tiny little minds. So believe us when we say we’ve found the future of entertainment; it’s the delirious tongue in cheek tag team of Mexican wrestling and burlesque that is Lucha VaVOOM and it’s coming to Bestival as a UK festival exclusive!

Bestival’s own king of the body slams Rob da Bank says: Yes, amigos, it’s happening! The world famous Mexican wrestling, striptease and burlesque whirlwind that is Lucha VaVoom is coming to the Isle of Wight this September. I saw this show in America last year and knew we had to get ‘em on the ferry, masks, mankinis and glitter and all… Seriously this is one madcap show and we’re proud to be showing it across the weekend at the same time every day in the Big Top. Arriba!

Founded in 2003 by Rita D’Albert and Liz Fairbairn, Lucha VaVOOM’s breath-taking combination of Mexican wrestling (or Lucha Libre as it’s known) and eye-popping high class burlesque has taken America and Canada by storm, and now it’s coming to the Isle of Wight. Featuring masked wrestlers performing amazing acrobatic feats in fast paced, fun-filled one-fall wrestling matches with hilarious commentary, and the very best in astonishing, raucous and beautiful Buxoticas in between bouts, this is like nothing you’ve ever witnessed before.

Taking place on Friday, Saturday Sunday in the Big Top, there will be high flying manoeuvres, tag team action and mid-afternoon delights from some of the world’s finest luchadores including mad mother pluckers The Crazy Chickens, the foulest mouthed luchador ever, Dirty Sanchez, goat-blood-sucking urban legend Chupacabra, supreme commander of wrestling El Presidente, everybody’s favourite rudo (bad guy!) Magno, Mexico City’s fastest rising lucha superstar Dragon Lee and CMLL World Tag Team champion, Diamante Azul.

Inter-bout burlesque action comes from a trio of the finest Buxoticas including Lucha VaVOOM co-founder Miss Rita, who has performed with the show since its inception, incredible dancer and hula hoop artiste Karis, who is described as Lucha VaVOOM’s crowning jewel, and long-time Bestival beauty and Guinness world record holder, Marawa the Amazing.

If you fancy a little taster of what’s in store in the Big Top this September, then check out this brilliant video!

Utterly incredible, Lucha VaVOOM is next level festival fun. This is the future! Don’t miss it.

#FancyDressFridays Are Here!

It’s no secret that the Bestival crew are fond of a bit of fancy dress. From world record attempts to all-encompassing themes, you know we’re chomping at the bit for everyone to bust out the spandex and glitter. So what better way to revel in our sartorial passions than to instigate a worldwide, weekly celebration, so you can show us exactly how you pimp your swag?

“We all love a Friday… the end of the week and a good excuse for sneaking out for a lunchtime beer, or throwing paper aeroplanes in the office, or dressing down… But what about dressing up?! We need no excuse to dress up at Bestival HQ, so we’re launching our #FancyDressFridays across the nation, hell, even the world, and we want YOU to join us.

“It could be a full on Darth Vader outfit, a burlesque dancing number, or a skin tight paint-spattered onesie but equally it could be a well-placed nipple tassel, a feather boa, or a pair of gold platform boots to go with your pinstripe suit. The world is your oyster and we want it well dressed. Prizes galore but mostly just an excuse for some end of the week deviance and rule breaking. See you on Fridays!” – Rob da Bank

So there you have it. #FancyDressFridays are here, and we want you to show us what you’ve got. With chances to win ace prizes including tickets, merchandise, books and much more, there’s no excuse not to get stuck into the dressing up box this Friday and every Friday from now on!

THE SPACEPORT

The Port is dead. Long live The Spaceport!

HMS Bestival has vanished in mysterious circumstances. Investigations are underway, but as the enigma deepens and the conspiracy theories grow, the ship’s fate remains unclear. As the future unfolds, and human horizons expand beyond the planet, The Port, devoid of its antiquated maritime attraction, will evolve into a new kind of universal berth. A colossal cosmodrome. The Spaceport.

Rob da Bank says: “Be under no illusions my futuristic friends… This stage is going to blow your mind and take you interstellar like no other stage before… This is The Future of the dance. HMS Bestival, our trusty old ship, has sunk or otherwise been sucked down a Bermuda Triangle shaped whirlpool, and thus we are reinventing Robin Hill’s sacred rave space once more with a spaceship the likes Planet Earth has never witnessed.
