NOTES TO EDITORS:

ABOUT RED BULL STUDIOS

Deep in the heart of southeast London lies The Red Bull Studios: a non-commercial recording studio and programmable space based in Red Bull’s UK headquarters.

As a legacy of the Red Bull Music Academy, this unique space is fast becoming one of the most exciting additions to London’s music scene, offering myriad artists the chance to come in and explore their creativity for free. The studio so far has nurtured homegrown talent, welcomed legendary musicians alongside unsigned artists and enabled musical creativity that may otherwise have gone unrealised. Anyone with a good idea and the talent to make it happen could realise their musical ambitions in this state-of-the-art recording studio.

From the recording, launch and live stream performance of Jessie Ware’s recent Devotion album to the heavy support of Benga in recent months via the six-part ‘I Am Benga’ documentary series, artists from all musical backgrounds have used the high spec space to record, perform and rehearse.

Collaborations, mash-ups, and the ability to let an artist’s creativity run wild are the intention of this forward-thinking facility. Recent months have seen the second series of Launched at Red Bull Studios airing on Channel 4 featuring artists such as A*M*E, AlunaGeorge, Bastille and Deap Vally. New albums recorded in the space include Bondax’s debut and vocals for Disclosure’s highly anticipated album Settle.

PLUS:

DAY TICKETS GO ON SALE MAY 17TH

With summer holidays around the corner we can’t wait to get back to Lulworth Castle for a festi-holiday weekend of fun and frolics for all the family from August 1st– 4th. And the Camp Bestival crew are leaving no stone unturned to make sure this year’s Camp Bestival is another absolute corker.

There really is something for everyone in this year’s line-up, so we’re very excited indeed to unveil a host of brilliant new acts that cover all bases, from huge popstars like our very special guest Mark Owen to brilliant local faves and beyond who will all be joining the likes of Labrinth, Richard Hawley, Levellers, Ash, The Proclaimers, Horrible Histories, Mr Tumble, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, Alan Davies, Dick n Dom, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures The Brit School and many more!

The Camp Bestival Crew Says: “There’s so much great music at Camp Bestival with something for everyone and we know how much fun a ladies night out is, so we’re very pleased to announce Mark Owen is coming to Lulworth Castle this year, especially for the girls!”

With his first solo album in eight years, ‘The Art of Doing Nothing’ due out in June, we very pleased to announce that Take That’s very own Mark Owen will be joining us at Lulworth Castle. With a hit-packed career spanning 20 years, Mark is one of the UKs biggest pop stars and along with his brilliant four-piece band he will be the soundtrack to a mega ladies night out on Saturday at Camp Bestival, playing not only his new and much loved solo material but also a tantalising selection of Take That anthems too!

Mark Owen Says: “Just about everybody I know with a family has told me how wonderful Camp Bestival is and said ‘you’ve got to go!’ I’ve got my Winnebago on order. See you there”.

But that’s not all, as we have plenty more top live music for your delectation, including Memphis chanteuse Valerie June who has been blowing away crowds with her mixture of folk, blues, gospel, soul, Appalachian and bluegrass music and her utterly magical vocals. If you haven’t caught her live yet, we guarantee this is one not to miss. There will also be live appearances from unique solo acoustic artist Cherishport, Dorset blues behemoth Red River Hogs, scrumpy & western phenomenon Skimmity Hitchers and New Forest duo Phil & Tilley.

Joining an already legendary line-up of amazing DJs that includes Grandmaster Flash, Sasha and Andrew Weatherall (in his A Love From Outer Space guide with Sean Johnston), we are very pleased to announce that deck-wrecking duo The Nextman are joining David Rodigan MBE’s Ram Jam line-up alongside Venum Sound and MC Wrec. Plus there will be high octane party flavours from the inimitable Russ Cuban, reggae and hip-hop mash-up madness from Jstar, divine turntable manoeuvres from Dick Kurtaine, eclectic treasures from Rev Milo Speedwagon, tubular sounds from Rowan Chernin (Chairman Of The Board Surf), rockin roots and psych love from In Light Of Aquarius and certified dancefloor devastation from Camp Bestival favourite Shepdog.

With a whole world of discovery for kids, plus the best in music, arts and culture it’s no wonder that weekend tickets are flying out of the door, so you’re going to have to get a move on if you want to guarantee a whole weekend enjoying our fest-holiday treats. But, due to popular local demand from the brilliantly supportive people of Dorset, we are once again putting a very limited number of day tickets on sale on Friday May 17th.

Adult day tickets will cost £60 per day, Age 15-17 day tickets are £35 per day, Age 11-14 day tickets are £30 per day and Age 10 and under day tickets are free (but you must obtain a ticket) and will be available in person from Lulworth Castle and Lulworth Heritage centre, as well as through the usual Camp Bestival ticket agents.

We’ve still got a few little surprises up our sleeves, so do keep an eye on www.campbestival.net and our Facebook and Twitter.

OUR FRIDAY NIGHT HEALINER REVEALED!

Featuring 10 fields of wonderment and 20 stages filled with amazing music, insane sideshows and magical happenings, Bestival’s spectacular 10th birthday bash this September 5th-8th is set to be nothing short of EPIC.

Celebrating those 10 years for all they’re worth, we’ve already got a musical line-up that’s second to none, with headline appearances from Elton John and Snoop Dogg, sets from MIA, Franz Ferdinand, Flaming Lips, The Knife, Wu-Tang Clan, Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Annie Mac Presents, and so many more. Plus we’ve got jaw-dropping attractions like our amazing new arena The Port, Films in the Forest, World Music Day on the Bandstand, The Wishing Tree, Swamp Shack and The Grand Palace of Entertainment, and now we are mind-blowingly excited to announce our crowd slaying Friday night headliner!

Rob da Bank says: “I still can’t believe Bestival is gonna be ten… but it is and that’s great cos it means we get to go even more mental with our onsite creations and general madness. We wanted to have a big moment for all our amazing crew and the beautiful Bestivalites whether they’ve been with us for the last decade or even just this year so we went back to one of our headliners from the first year and someone who’s supported us since our early days in clubland. Yes ladies and gents boys and girls roll up roll up for what will be the biggest spectacle in UK festival land as we unveil Fatboy Slims Bestival Birthday Bash”

Fatboy Slim says: “It was at Glastonbury 2003 where I closed the Sunday Best stage for Rob da Bank that I first saw the glint in his eye to create his own festival. 12 months later I was headlining Bestival and TEN years on, here I am again, throwing them the biggest birthday bash possible and sharing the main stage alongside Elton John and Snoop Dogg. It’s an absolute honour to return for this momentous moment – staying creative and independent in these times. You’ve come a long way, baby!”

YES! Our much anticipated Friday night headliner will be the one and only Fatboy Slim AKA Norman Cook. Norman was one of the very first headliners at the inaugural Bestival in 2004, so it’s a real coup to have him aboard HMS Bestival in his rightful place once again, helping to celebrate our spectacular tenth anniversary. Playing an exclusive set just for us, which he’s dubbed ‘Fatboy Slim’s Bestival Birthday Bash’, it’s guaranteed to be a monumental appearance, with outrageous onstage birthday party antics galore and some very special surprises which will be revealed on the night. Armed with an almost endless abundance of mega-hits from Everybody Needs A 303 to Slash Dot Dash and way beyond, you can expect the mother of all celebrations as the master of good-time party music throws down a large helping of epic goodness, like only he can.

You don’t want to miss this one it’s going to be a legendary 10th birthday. And what a 10 years it’s been, from just a few thousand people rocking out in 2004 to becoming the Best Major Festival winner in 2012, we certainly have come a long way baby! Staying true to our independent, boutique roots we’re playing with the big boys now and we promise a spectacle that’s not to be missed, it’s going to be the party of the year, so don’t miss out!

It’s full steam ahead for HMS Bestival. Roll on September!

New Order release a live recording of their amazing set at Bestival last year, on Monday 8th July on Sunday Best Recordings.

“Live at Bestival 2012”, a charity CD to support the Isle Of Wight Youth Trust, will be available on CD and digital download. Check out www.sundaybest.net. for retail outlet info.

To quote New Order frontman Bernard Sumner, on stage at Bestival, and speaking to an ecstatic 50,000 strong crowd, “Thank you so much, you’ve been a fantastic audience. Hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as we have. What a great festival, it’s the BEST festival!”

Speaking recently, drummer Stephen Morris continues, “ We played at so many festivals in 2012, and our highlights were, without doubt, the last two in the UK, Portmeirion and Bestival. Saturday night was fancy-dress night, and Gillian enjoyed dressing up in her peacock head-dress. This charity release is a special way to mark the Bestival experience, and we’re thrilled to be working with Rob and Josie’s team to raise money for such a worthy cause on the Island. It’s great to give something back, and also to give such a brilliant crowd something to remember the show by. And if you weren’t there, buy the CD and enjoy the experience that way! ”

Rob da Bank, founder of Bestival says

“As part of our Live From Bestival series we needed to choose an act from 2012 that nailed it for not only us at Bestival HQ and the crowd but also would come across as perfectly on a CD. New Order fit that bill and then some. I was lucky enough to be side of stage for the start of the gig, in the middle of a pogoing crowd for much of the set and then back onstage for the finale. The whole band looked like they were loving it and the crowd was vintage Bestival – appreciative, raucous and dancing like maniacs! Thanks so much to New Order for supporting our charity cause as sales from this recording will really help young people on the Isle Of Wight.”

Eileen Monks, Director of The Isle of Wight Youth Trust, says; “What wonderful news that New Order should choose us, an Island charity of 29 years, to benefit in this way. This came completely out of the blue and at a time when it is becoming extra hard to raise funds to support our work with children and young people on the Island, further cementing our association with young people in their many interests and aspects of their lives. We would like to thank Rob da Bank for his continuing support.”

Created and hosted by performance poet Chris Redmond (Scroobius Pip’s Spoken Word Surgery – BBC Radio One; Bespoken Word, Pick Of The Week – BBC Radio Four), it is one of London’s liveliest and largest spoken word shows: a riotous experiment in live literature, music and improvisation.

Currently resident at The Southbank’s London Wonderground, Tongue Fu has played The Barbican, The Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Glastonbury Festival, Bestival, Latitude and now, for the first time, Edinburgh Festival.

GET INVOLVED CHARABANG

REEPS ONE / ARTHUR LEA / THE ROYAL ORGAN DUO / MAGICAL BONES

RICH MIX, BETHNAL GREEN ROAD

WEDNESDAY MAY 8TH / FREE ENTRY

Get Involved are very proud to present Charabang!, our brand new monthly showcase of new talent from our roster held at East London’s premiere performance venue, Rich Mix. Charabang! will host only the very best in emerging talent from Get Involved; co-founders of Bestival and managers of acts including DJ Yoda, Howard Marks aka Mr Nice, and the Cuban Brothers.

Kicking things off in the finest style, Charabang will feature a heady mix of the most exciting acts currently wowing crowds around the country.

Reeps One

Leave what you think about beatboxing at the door, Reeps One is a vocal force. If you are unfamiliar this walking, breathing sound system, he is the first to ever vocalise bass music in a way that has had producers and scientists alike scratching their heads and invariably dancing.

Reeps Is an acoustic instrument, a human that speaks electronic music and can stand up to the highest energy DJ’s in the world. He has played alongside Foreign Beggars, toured the UK with the mighty Prodigy and won the UK Beatbox Championships twice in a row; all with a sound that truly made people dance, without a loop pedal in sight.

Arthur Lea

Arthur has been hammering honky tonks since his hands could first reach the keys. Somewhere between the London jazz scene and the American delta, he sings a retro brand of rhythm n blues, happening hooks, and southern soul…

…The child was born in the back of a 1949 Hudson as it rolled out of New York harbour, heading west for the nearest speakeasy. The radio, still jammed on war time hit parades, spewed out a diet of Louis Jordan and Hank Williams, until a Pittsburgh mechanic added a little Blue Note oil, releasing gallons of gumbo and Memphis soul stew. The young boy swallowed it all up hungrily, before trading in his wheels for a spinet piano and a job in a juke joint. Here, folks back home sent him British rock n roll on vinyl, before he hit the road again with a trunk full of gospel, jump and bluegrass. This is his story, this is his song…

“hard-riffing”” “excellent pianist…like a 21st-century Thelonious Monk” – John Fordham, The Guardian

“Like the blues legends he admires, Arthur Lea is not only a great singer and songwriter – he’s also a fantastic showman” – Rick Pearson, Evening Standard music critic

Magical Bones

You may think you’ve seen it all before, but you’re in for a real surprise! One of the world’s foremost up and coming magical talents, Magical Bones seamlessly combines his love of magic with incredible moves honed from a career dancing for some of the biggest names in the music industry including Madonna, The Black Eyed Peas and Plan B. This is magic like no one else does it.

The Tootsie Rollers

From wowing audiences at Bestival and Wayne Hemingway’s Vintage, to strutting their stuff at Royal Ascot, The Tootsie Rollers dazzle with their sizzling sounds and high-energy performances. They’re the perfect fusion of glamorous golden-era style with a contemporary twist to get the party going!

The Royal Organ Duo

After taking a break from their long standing residencies as both Buckingham Palace & Windsor Castle house band, and fresh from their world tour of Cornwall, The Royal (formerly Olympic) Organ Duo are proud to be back where they belong, performing for you, the people! Join them on their voyage through all things rare-groove, lounge-piano and all out funk as they create the ultimate live party mix.

As if that wasn’t enough to get things off to a bang, there are three more jam-packed nights of fun to be had at Charabang! across June and July

FREE ENTRY

With 10 fields of wonderment filled with amazing music, insane sideshows and magical happenings, Bestival’s spectacular 10th birthday bash this September 5th-8th will have something for just about everyone. And if you’re hankering for the freshest music on site, then you’re in luck, as we’re delighted to announce that the ‘Replay with Rob da Bank’ stage will be returning again this year!

Rob da Bank says “Last year we really went to town on the ‘Replay with Rob da Bank’ stage with some amazing bands making it one of the most popular stages we’ve ever had with insane performances from the likes of Alt-J tearing the place apart. This year’s no different, we’ve gone full steam ahead and booked one of the best line-ups of exciting and fresh music that you’re likely to see all year long, with The 1975, Swim Deep, Merchandise and Jagwar Ma amongst many I ‘d recommend. Make sure you don’t miss out on this one, it’s gonna be big.”

One of the biggest draws on site when it made it’s inaugural appearance last year, huge crowds were treated to acts such as Kate Nash, ALT_J, Skepta, and Jake Bugg. Now situated in its very own unique big top tent, the ‘Replay with Rob da Bank’ stage will play host to a litany of newly announced acts, including sublime stream of consciousness action from Ghostpoet, Disclosure collaborator Sam Smith, hotly tipped Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt, super sharp beatnicks Ruen Brothers, hook-heavy Nottingham quintet Dog is Dead, folk-rockers To Kill A King, anthemic duo Man Without Country, melancholy mix maestros Feeling Gloomy and sassy chanteuse Chloe Howl. Plus there will be appearances from Champs, Jagwar Ma, Lewis Watson and Molotov Jukebox with many more previously announced acts to be added to the stage, watch this space for more news.

If you can’t wait until September for a taster of what Replay has to offer then the Road Trip To Bestival is for you! You can catch a selection of artists from the Replay line-up pre-Bestival at two exclusive in-store performances. Replay’s Road Trip To Bestival will kick-off in London, at Replay Store Carnaby Street in August.

FROM LADY GAGA’S DRESS DESIGNER, ALEX NOBLE

There’s always been a flamboyant air around Bestival. With a cheeky touch of chichi style and a knowingly arched brow, we’ve played host, over the years, to some of the most outrageous turns around, from the finest alternative cabaret to some deliciously debauched club action. So, with our spectacular 10th birthday fast approaching from September 5th-8th, we’ve lined up the biggest and the very best array of ostentatious entertainment you’re ever likely to see, as Bestival goes cruising!

‘Bestival is ten years old this year and I’d like to think over the last decade of dancing at our beautiful festival that we’ve been one of the most open minded festivals in the world welcoming all, it sure feels like that at 3am on a Saturday morning. This year we’ve teamed up with some of the UK’s most dazzling trailblazers to bring some outrageous and uninhibited parties to the lower decks of HMS Bestival. Stand by for a cast of freaky girls and hot sailor boys stoking the fires as we steam towards the dawn… See you at the bar, boys!’ – Rob da Bank

“My brief was to help get the gays to the island and this year Bestival will be flying the (rainbow) flag with pride. I’m really excited to be bringing four productions to Bestival this year, including the debut of ‘Drag’ – with local drag performers, my solo show ‘The Worst of Scottee’ and for the second year running my variety show ‘Camp’ and not to forget the infamous ‘Room Service”. – Scottee

That’s right, Room Service, London and New York’s hottest gay party is coming to our brand new venue, The Port, to hit you hard and deep with a festival premier that’s exclusive to Bestival 2013! There will be a soundtrack of killer underground house beats and aural stimulation from GoGo boys, plus some obligatory tranny madness thrown in for good measure, bringing Soho and the Meatpacking District to the Isle of Wight. Room Service takes you DOWNtown and keeps you UP all night with DJ’s Jodie Harsh, Kris Di Angelis and Severino. This is a deluxe gay dance party and a downright naughty secret. You want to know why this night is so deliciously infamous? Come and find out at the Port on Friday…

“I can’t wait to get to Bestival, and we’re shipping the whole Room Service troupe from Soho to the Isle of Wight. Prepare for hot boys, gogo dancer action and crazy tranny madness set to a soundtrack of underground house. That’s my kind of party!” – Jodie Harsh

Also celebrating a joyous tenth anniversary, we’re very pleased indeed to welcome back the fabulous Horse Meat Disco. A disco behemoth beyond compare it’s the queer party for everyone, where they’ll be slipping a sensuous selection of italo disco, house, oddities and punk funk onto the soundsystem for your delectation. Inspired by the music and inclusive ethos of New York’s heady club scene in the 80s & 90s, the collective has garnered a unique reputation for throwing amazing parties with unmatchable sets. The quartet of DJs each mixes their own individual interpretations of the disco sound with a soundtrack that marries their expertise and shared knowledge and experience in the field. Expect all manner of dancefloor movers.

But that’s not all, after last year’s spectacular debut, Bestival’s glorious adventure-land The Grand Palace of Entertainment is back! So leave your inhibitions at the door and crank up the fun factor…On the outside, it’s a beautifully decorated traditional fairground facade. On the inside, it’s a rainbow coloured pleasure-seeking, twisted, hot-house of fun.

In the daytime, masters of entertainment Massive in China will be presenting an eclectic and intriguing selection of comedy, cabaret, games, foot-stomping music, plus a generous sprinkling of other oddities and spectacles.

The evenings will be a raucous and colourful ride… so hold onto your glitter wigs. First up, the eminent Scottee is returning with a special edition of his naff variety show Camp, featuring turns from East London super-tranny, Jonny Woo. In a very special Bestival exclusive, Scottee has also dragged together some of the UK’s most established names in female impersonation for an evening of sequins, hairspray and mouthing the words to Cher in Drag: A Cruise Ship Special.

The irreverent kings of alternative karaoke, Hot Breath, will be bringing 10,000 songs for you to destroy, plus those who are brave enough can step up to the Cardioke challenge – karaoke on a cross-trainer. Or you could try your hand at the Totally Exciting Championship of Household Games Tournament - a competition bound only by a person’s willingness to attach 50 clothes pegs to their face.

The Social Club Cabaret will hit the Grand Palace in the face like a happy, bright and beautiful wet kipper, in true variety style, featuring acrobatic ballroom dancers and knife throwing housewives. Or if you think you can do better, then sign up for the Talent Show of the year and bring your special talents to the stage – stick your toe up your nose or burp the alphabet. With prizes and fireworks, it goes without saying, the sillier the better!

Three times runner up to be in the running for the Eurovision song contest star Trevi Fontayne is a dream come true – just make a wish and he’ll sing you a song, from ‘I kissed a guy and I liked it’ to ‘Nuns just want to have Fun’. Or if that isn’t enough sing-along nostalgia for you, then join Gino and his beautiful gameshow hostesses, the Velines, in 80s Italian extravaganza, Gino’s Italopop Disco.

Then hang around to dabble in some late-night debauchery with Bestival party monsters Sink the Pink, taking the Grand Palace into the wee hours. These adorable show-offs are the most energetic, additive, colourful troop of tranny divas this side of East London, with pop-tastic guilty pleasures party DJ sets and eye-popping shows all night. And for the last set on Sunday night, party with infamous rebel DJs Gutterslut, for a non-stop playground for freaks and geeks, transvestites, gays, straights, whoever, whatever: you’re in!

And not forgetting the delicious icing on the cake: the Grand Palace will be dressed from head to toe in outlandishly bonkers decor, presented by creative genius Alex Noble, artist, designer and dress maker to Lady Gaga.

It’s going to be a colourful ride, friends. See you in wonderland!
